Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does the DBT program entail?

A: The program involves group, individual, and telephone consultation. The program is described in more detail in the Dialectical Behavior Therapy section of this web site.

Q: Is the DBT program a day treatment program or outpatient program?

A: It is an intensive outpatient program. Treatment typically involves one group session and one inidividual session each week.

Q: How do I get referred to the DBT program?

A: Call (708) 403-7570 for information and/or an intake appointment. After an initial evaluation, findings are presented to the therapists' weekly consultation meeting where a therapist will be identified to work with you.

Q: Can I continue to see my current therapist while in the DBT program?

A: Yes, and we require each person in the program to have a DBT individual therapist. Outcome data shows this is essential. We consider Stage 1 work in DBT as time limited. After Stage 1 targets are met, the client can return to their therapist. For reasons of cost and focus, we suggest temporary suspension or at most monthly check-ins with your long-term therapist.

Q: How long is the treatment?

A: We require a three month commitment to the DBT program. We do not intend to suggest that treatment will be complete in this timeframe. However, you and your therapist should have a good sense of whether the program is leading to improvement in this timeframe. Should this be the case, most clients re-up consecutive three-month commitments. The average length of stay is 9 to 14 months.

Q: Do I have to be in the DBT program to use your services?

A: EMP specializes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Nonetheless, we recognize that not everyone requires a highly intensive outpatient service. Therefore, we also provide traditional outpatient services for persons who struggle with problems related to depression, anxiety, food and substance use. EMP therapists also work with individuals and couples seeking to enhance their relationships and develop meaningful lives.

Q: My daughter/son/spouse needs services. Will you accept them into the program?

A: We recognize that on occasion you may desire services for a loved one who does not share your concern. For the most part, psychotherapy outcome is highly predicted by a person's interest in participating and belief that it will lead to improvement.

Q: What funding do you accept?

A: We accept private pay, sliding scale, and have developed ad hoc agreements for clients from several commercial insurances. Dr. Holmes is Medicare-certified, and we are in-network providers for several commercial insurance companies. Since our standing with insurance companies as network providers is growing, we encourage you to contact us regarding these and other potential funding options.
